Getting up on my high horse
I think modern society is far too obsessed with the lives of teenagers. I am totally sick of all these trashy teen soap operas that are getting more and more risque. I am especially peeved with the new version of 90210 that is about to be unleashed on the masses. I loved that show in its original incarnation in the early 90's, and it was plenty racy for the times, but it is just pathetic that the people who were part of the original series are trying to profit from it again. I mean, jeez, Jennie Garth, don't you have anything better to do? Have another kid with Peter Facinelli, or something. You don't need to do this! It's embarrassing! And also, why are you trying to compete with Gossip Girl?

Don't even get me started on Gossip Girl. I may start retching again.

I think this infatuation with vapid, wealthy, oversexed teenagers shows a real lack of maturity for this entire country, and illustrates how sad and lacking today's communal values system is.

But really, my disgust isn't only for the values of my own country's society, but for other parts of Western civilization as well. I watched some of the very racy new series Skins about teenagers in Bristol, England, on BBCA, and with the exception of one character, I could not sympathize with any of these badly behaving young people. Their parents are depicted as total assholes, so you're supposed to side with the teens, but I refuse to sympathize with brats who wreck the home of one of their friends at a party while the adults are away and then drive a car into a lake, without having to suffer any consequences.

I must be an old lady or something. I think I always was an old lady. I was very sheltered as a teenager, and went to a very demanding high school, so no one really had time to get into much trouble, but even if I had fewer restrictions on me, I still don't think I ever would have behaved so badly. And I have been made fun of (and worse) for being uptight, on numerous occasions. It's really sad that I, and others, have been ostracized for having standards

    Escape!
As some of you already know, I ran away to Baltimore County for a week. Not the city, but far North of that, almost at the PA border.

It's less then an hour to the city from here, but it's entirely different. It's a rural area, mostly farms and fields and forests, with patches of suburbia/exurbia here and there, like the one I'm staying in.

Unlike most suburbs, living here kind of makes sense. You're in the middle of nowhere, but you have plenty of space for a large house, and a huge lot around it. No neighbors looking over your shoulder or peeking into your windows, no lights shining everywhere. No neighborhood association looking over your shoulder, no local regulations telling you what you can or can't have on your front lawns.

I've gotten pleasantly lethargic since I've been here, enjoying the quiet and the lack of cars and letting the days flow by. I had intended to go into Baltimore or DC to see friends, but I haven't found myself with any desire to do so - I've just escaped the city, why head into another one?

Still, if you're in the area and you'd like to meet up, get ahold of me in any of the usual fashions. I'm here for a few more days, at least, and there are many of you I'd love to see.

i'm now free master and everyone
surprise: i CANNOT stop listening to this new bonnie prince billy live record, is it the sea? i hope i get to see this man live one day. i hope i get to hug him. anyway, there's this one song, and i actually just found out that it's an old traditional song or whatever, so he didn't write it, but that's probably the one i listen to most on the record. molly bawn! i love this song! and the last bit the best. sorry but i give away the ending. spoiler alert!

The night before Molly's funeral, her ghost did appear,
Crying, "Uncle, dear Uncle, let Jimmy go clear.
I was going to my uncle's when a shower came on.
I went under a green bush, the shower to shun.
With my white apron 'round me, he took me for a swan.
Won't you tell him he's forgiven, by his own Molly Bawn?"

a girl sings that bit! molly bawn sings that bit! what a story, right there.

    Bizarre Olympic sports
Riddle me this: How do people get started with some of these sports? Like track racing with bicycles? Do these indoor sloped bicycle tracks exist in a lot of places? It's not like anyone says on a Saturday afternoon, "Hey let's go down to the bicycle track." (This same question can apply to luge or bobsledding as well.)

When a rider wins an equestrian medal, does the horse get a medal too?

And who said dancing around with a ribbon could be an olympic sport? Or dancing around underwater, for that matter? Or table tennis? Seriously, I mean seriously? Where's Olympic air hockey then? Olympic video game playing? What about the athletes whose activities aren't sport, like aerobics instructors? Why can't sit-ups be an Olympic sport?

    diaried days
i think i'm going to buy a pink lipstick this week. i've got a red and an orange so it's obvious to see what would make my life complete. i want to buy a bunch of stuff actually. i had a really depressing shopping trip after school one day last week. i didn't find anything. everything fit wrong, i had the fattest week of my life and everything was so so mini, and i don't really go higher than just above my knee. i found some shoes i want though, but i couldn't really walk in them. you need to be able to walk in your heels, right? i could sort of clomp in these.
i think i'm finally buying my india ticket this week. assignments are piling up also. we've got to organize seminars and i magically ended up in charge because nobody else was doing much. i've got to do this personal networking thing and i don't know what i'm doing. i've got to make a bunch of movies and i'm hoping that goes well. my elective is cruisy though. it's called art in public places. we just walk around the city with a great teacher who's constantly amused or something.
my personal life is feeling weird. suddenly all my friends are people younger than me. i continue to feel like a cool and busy nun. i want a cute new dress. maybe i'll buy those shoes after all. clomp around in my pink lipstick.

"We're plenty cranky, but only a few things work us into a really frothy righteous rage — our Xanadu DVD disappearing, the popularity of the Twilight books, and of course the resurrection of leggings."

    Queens zoo pics
On Sunday I went to the Queens Zoo in Flushing Meadow Park. I hadn't been there since I was a kid and now that I am a member of the WCS I get free admission to all the NYC zoos, so I've been meaning to check it out for awhile now. Most of the animals there are from North America, the one exception (I think) being the spectacled bear, which is native to the Andes in South America.

My favorite part of the Queens Zoo though are the farm animals. They have 5 or 6 highland cows -- 'airy coos! Under the cut. )
